ETD Standards Meeting Agenda
The following is a draft agenda for the upcoming ETD standards meeting to be held on January 9th and 10th at OCLC in Dublin. There are two main topics that concern us. See the titles for each, the driving question, and proposed writing team (with initial chair’s names underlined):
To answer the first question, we will be discussing an "Interoperability Metadata Standard" for ETDs. This will be a standard outlining what information we can collect and share regarding our respective ETD collections. To answer the second question, we will be discussing an "Encoding Standard" to help us store metadata in a way that can be easily used by union databases and other collaborative efforts between ETD collections.
Our end goal is to produce a document detailing how to handle each of these questions. There will be two small groups of writers and editors working on each topic. Before the meeting, these groups will prepare a rough outline or working draft that will be the starting point for discussions.
Before the discussions begin, there will be a review of the work that has already been done in these areas as well as a review of a few possible models we might choose to adopt or adapt.
The discussions themselves will be open to the group at large, with careful records being kept by members of the smaller teams. After the first day of discussion, each of these teams will draft a document to be refined and finalized during the second day.
The overall process of developing a document for each of these topics goes as follows:
On the next two pages, you will find a timetable for this development work.
